Steve Adamko’s Interior Design Journey
Steve Adamko started his journey at five years old wanting to be a carpenter. The love of tools and power tools, as well as working with his hands was mesmerizing. 10 years after Steve became extremely interested in architecture and buildings, and wanting to be an architect. Even though he loved the subject of geometry, he did not like the thought of calculus. He didn’t want to be that mathematically involved.
So, in the latter years of high school he turned his attention to interior design which combines the elements of carpentry and architecture into one field of endeavor. Steve reasoned that you could do more with the inside of a building than you could with the outside of a building. And besides is the interior that touches the lives of people.
After high school Steve took two years off and then enrolled in Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At that time Kendall was a small private college that had four disciplines being offered. Those being Illustration, Advertising, Furniture Design, and Interior Design.
After graduation from Kendall School of Design in 1979, Steve landed a job at a very high and retail furniture store, named Jacobson’s Store for the Home in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He worked there three years on high in projects before striking out on his own in 1982. He started Spectrum Interiors in January of 1982.
